The cause of this patient's pathology?

A male presents to the neurology clinic with complaints that he has difficulty walking. He noted the problem in his right foot only about 3-months ago and denies any trauma (See image). He was in good health until this problem started. He has also developed mild ankle instability and has difficulty putting on shoes. On exam, the deformity appears to be flexible and he has considerable weakness of his anterior leg muscles. He is on no medications and has no allergies. In the remote past, he underwent a left inguinal hernia repair. Blood work is all normal and the plain x-rays of the foot are not revealing.
