Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive condition caused by a mutation in the CFTR gene which produces an anion channel that is important in the creation of sweat, digestive fluids and mucous. The most common specific mutation is delta F508 which is found in 1 in 30 Caucasians. Heterozygous carriers are thought to have a survival advantage by being more resistant to dehydration from diarrhoea.
