HYPOGLYCAEMIA IN SAM
➤ If the blood glucose cannot be measured, it should be assumed that all children with severe malnutrition have hypoglycaemia
➤ If the blood glucose can be measured (Hypoglycemia is defined as heel prick or finger prick sample blood sugare level <54mg/dl)
➤If the child is conscious give 50 ml of 10% glucose or sucrose orally/NG-tube then 1/4th of 3-hourly F-75feeding evert 30 minute for the first 2 hours
➤If the child is unconscious, treat with IV 10% glucose 5 ml/kg or, then 50ml of 10% glucose or sucrose solution by nasogastric tube
MONITORING
REPEAT RBS after 30 minutes/2hours

  • If blood glucose <54 mg/dl, repeat the 10% glucose or sugar solution
  • If the rectal temperature falls <35.5 °C or if there is deterioration in the level of consciousness, repeat the dextrostix measurement and treat accordingly

PREVENTION
➤Starting feeding immediately
➤Feed 2 - 3 hourly ( including day & night)
➤Continue feeding throughout the night
