Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (also known as laryngeal papillomatosis) is a disease caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
It is characterised by warty growths in the upper respiratory tract which can cause significant airway obstruction.
Patients present with hoarseness of voice and breathing difficulty.
Treatment is by removal of the tumour via surgery / carbon dioxide laser.
It may be supplemented by intralesional injection of cidofovir in moderate to severe disease.
Interferon therapy can also be used.
