Dear applicants, these tips I collected fom the most expert guiders:
There are some factors that should be taken into consideration when arranging the list, these are the most important.
1-Maybe the most important factor is whether the program is in a University hospital or in a community one. Traditionally all applicants will rank the University on top and this is the correct thing which you have to do.
2-After you divide your programs to 2 groups university and none university, arrange each group in order of number of fellowships they provide or according to the percentage of residents that they get fellowships later.
3-Universities with research opportunities (even if you dont want to do research) should be ranked in the top because it will be easier for you in your future endevour especially getting fellowsips and jobs.
4-Try to keep the programs that are present in relativey dangerous areas in the bottom, for example NY (Brooklyn area), especially if you are married or have family members with you.
5-your total chance in matching doesn't depend on how you rank but it depends on how the PDs rank you.
your rank list will only affect how will NRMP search for you for a position in the order that you prefer, so if you didnt match to the first it will take you to the second and so.
to make it easy for you, rank the programs that you like on top.
Sorry ,but i have to disagree with much of this list of "advice"

this depends on what you are looking for...there are many good community programs out there and just blindly ranking uni programs without taking into account the program is a bit foolish.
my extreme example? Cleveland Clinic and Mayo are both community programs...really? gonna rank Howard U. over CC?
if you are planning on being a community clinician, then the experience you will get in treating the common things will serve you better than seeing the weird and unusual...in general if you are family med bound an unopposed program is better than a uni program...at the uni program you very well could be the red headed step child as you rotate though everyone elses's department...at an unopposed program, YOU are the go to guy!
even if fellowship is in your future a community program with fellowship programs that take their own may be a better option than a uni program that doesn't have a lot of fellowships (or doesn't give preferential tx to their own).

again this could be true for those looking for fellowships, but not necessarily for those looking to become hospitalists or primary care.

actually do agree with this...some sort of publication will help and getting publications done will be easier at a place that has research available.

do this and you will eliminate many good programs...you don't have to live in the immediate area of the hospital, but some of your best teaching experiences will come from hospitals in not-so-great areas...posh hopitals will not have alot of service pts and therefore you may not see the cases you need to, to become a well trained competent doctor.

bit confusing here, but the Match is geared to favor the student, not the program...the program will onnly be favored when 2 applicants rank a program the same, then the program's ranking of those 2 will decide who gets the spot.
but i do agree with the statement that you should rank the programs you like 1st, not how you think the program will rank you.
