New AMC Book Supports Exam Candidates Australian Medical Council
New AMC Book Supports Exam Candidates
14 December 2007
The Australian Medical Council has recently launched a new book produced to help International Medical Graduates (IMGs) prepare for the AMC clinical examination and support their integration into the Australian medical workforce.
The AMC Handbook of Clinical Assessment publication is a comprehensive guide to clinical medical practice in Australia. It is designed around self-test clinical tasks with accompanying commentaries and performance guidelines reflecting best practice principles.
Launching the handbook, AMC President, Dr Joanna Flynn, said the AMC was not aware of any other publication or resource of this type available to IMGs.
“Close to 40% of IMGs who pass the initial AMC MCQ examination, fail the subsequent clinical examination. Analysis of candidate performance shows us that candidates who don’t pass the clinical examination in their first two or three attempts are unlikely to do so without some form of bridging or remedial training,” Dr Flynn said.
“But access to this training is limited. The AMC developed the handbook to help meet the urgent need to provide guidance to IMGs about appropriate clinical practice in Australia,” Dr Flynn said.
The handbook is the third in a series of publications prepared by the AMC to support IMGs.
“International medical graduates form an important part of Australia’s medical workforce. The more we can do to clarify expected clinical standards in this country, the better it is for IMGs and the better it is for the Australian community,” Dr Flynn said.
Dr Flynn said the AMC Handbook of Clinical Assessment would also be of considerable value to Australian medical students and to agencies funded by the Commonwealth to provide training to IMGs.
