Step 1 consists of seven sections of 50 questions each. The student will have one hour to complete each section. Step 1 covers various topics that fall under the area of basic science.like anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. Questions of step 1 are in multiple choice questions format
STEP 2 USMLE
The USMLE Step 2 is divided into two sections. The first section is designed to test your basic clinical knowledge and the fundamentals needed for the practice of medicine and is known as "Clinical Knowledge" also USMLE Step 2 CK .
USMLE PREP
The best way is to plan ahead of time. Set aside a lot of study time. If you plan a couple of years ahead of time, and get your act together, you will absolutely do great in the USMLE.
USMLE Step 2 CS
The second section known as USMLE Step 2 CS, also "Clinical Skills". This is a "live practical exam" in which you have 15 minutes to examine Patients. The goal of this part of the exam is to determine if you have the basic skills in physical exam and history taking .This type of exam used to be limited to foreign medical graduates, but has been recently expanded so that all graduates must take the exam.
COST OF USMLE
The total fee for Step 1 or Step 2 consists of the examination fee plus the international test delivery surcharge, if exam is taken outside USA or Canada.
Examination fee for each exam varies from year to year and the international test delivery surcharge also varies depending on the country of exam, so watch out for this year's fees on USMLE bulletin.
STEP 3 USMLE
Step 3 of the USMLE is the final part of the exam. Step 3 will test the student's ability to work in an unsupervised environment. Students must apply their knowledge of biomedical and clinical science to manage and assist patients in an ambulatory setting as well as display their ability to handle some scenarios involving inpatient encounters. Because students will become independent physicians, it is crucial to ensure that students have obtained sound knowledge and practical skills that can be applied when treating patients.
This part of the exam will have two basic dimensions:
1) The clinical encounter and
2) The physician task.
USMLE CLINICAL SKILLS
The physician tasks that students should be knowledgeable in include assessing the severity of problems as described by patients, managing patient therapy, and making clinical judgments. Exam questions regarding clinical problems will include identification and control of diseases, especially those considered mainstream or high-impact.
WHO ADMINISTERS THE USMLE EXAMINATION ?
The United States Medical Licensing Examination or USMLE is a multi-part professional exam sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).passing USMLE is required to obtain license to practice medicine in USA.
WHAT DOES USMLE STEP 1 ASSESS ?
Step 1 assesses whether you understand and can apply important concepts of the basic sciences with special emphasis on principles and mechanisms underlying health, disease, and modes of therapy. Step 1 ensures mastery of not only the sciences that provide a foundation for the safe and competent practice of medicine in the present, but also the scientific principles required for maintenance of competence through lifelong learning.
Step 1 can be taken during the second year of studying medicine.
WHAT DOES USMLE STEP 2 ASSESS ?
Step 2 of the USMLE is clinically oriented than that of Step 1. Step 2 consists of two parts
1. Step 2 clinical knowledge (CK)
2. Step 2 clinical skills (CS)
USMLE STEP THREE - A DIFFERENT WORLD
USMLE Step 3 is designed to assess whether a medical school graduate can apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine. Graduates of US medical schools typically take this exam at the end of the first year of residency.
FOREIGN MEDICAL GRADUATES AND USMLE STEP 3
Foreign medical graduates can take Step 3 before starting residency in about ten U.S. states. Connecticut is frequently chosen for such purpose because it does not require simultaneous application for licensure, unlike New York.
USMLE STEP THREE TEST DURATION
Step 3 examination is for two days and it can be taken in US only. Each day of testing must be completed within eight hours. The first day of testing includes 336 multiple-choice items divided into blocks, each consisting of 48 items, time limit for each block is sixty minutes.
The second day of testing includes 144 multiple-choice items, divided into blocks of 36 items. Time limit to complete each block is forty-five minutes. Approximately 3 hours are allowed for these multiple-choice item blocks. Also on the second day are nine Clinical Case Simulations, also known as CCS, where the examinees are required to 'manage' patients in real-time case simulations. Examinees enter orders for medications and/or investigations into the simulation software, and the condition of the patient changes accordingly. Each case must be managed in a maximum of 25 minutes of actual time.
Approximately forty five minutes of break is available each of the two days of testing.

SUBJECTS COVERED BY USMLE STEP 1
USMLE Step 1 assesses whether medical school students or graduates understand and can apply important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine. Step 1 covers the following subjects, in both systemic (general and individual anatomical characteristics) and procedural (functional, therapeutic, environmental, and abnormality) themes:
· Anatomy,
· Behavioral sciences,
· Biochemistry,
· Microbiology,
· Pathology,
· Pharmacology,
· Physiology,
· Interdisciplinary topics, such as nutrition, genetics
USMLE STEP 1 SCHEDULE
US medical students usually take Step 1 at the end of the second year of medical school. It is an eight-hour computer-based exam consisting of 336 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) divided into seven blocks each consisting of 48 questions. From summer 2008, some questions include audio and video. Each block must be finished within an hour. The remaining hour is break time. An optional tutorial about how to use the computer program of the exam is offered at the beginning of the exam and takes 15 minutes. This time is deducted from the hour of allotted break time.
USMLE SCORES AND PERCENTILES
The scores are reported with a three digit score and a two digit score. From January 1, 2007, the passing score has been raised to 185 from a previous score of 182. The average score is approximately 215. If the student passes the exam, he or she may not repeat the exam to achieve a higher score. Theoretically, the maximum score is 300. Scores of more than 280 are really unheard of.
MEDICAL RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS AND USMLE
The Step 1 score is frequently used in medical residency applications as a measure of a candidate's likelihood to succeed in that particular residency (and on that specialty's board exams). More competitive residency programs usually accept applications with higher Step 1 scores. The Step 1 exam is the hardest and most important examination a medical student will take during his/her career.
Step 2 assesses whether you can apply medical knowledge, skills, and understanding of clinical science essential for the provision of patient care under supervision and includes emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. Step 2 ensures that attention is devoted to principles of clinical sciences and patient-centered skills that provide the basis for the safe and competent practice of medicine.
Step 3 provides a final assessment of physicians assuming independent responsibility for delivering general medical care. A principal organizing dimension for Step 3 design is normal conditions and disease categories. Second and third organizing dimensions are the clinical encounter frame and physician tasks. Content of Step 3 reflects a data-based model of generalist medical practice in the United States.
